Scared to Death
(2004)
You don't need to be told about this film, you just want to know if this is the DVD to buy. YES, it is. The quality of this print is astounding. It's beautiful, sharp and clear, and even the TRAILER for the film (included on the disc) is in good shape. Under ordinary circumstances I'd be happy with the quality of this print and trailer (and even with the quality of the transfer), but considering what a cheap little public domain title SCARED TO DEATH is, and the fact that the quality…
Dracula Has Risen From The Grave
(1969)
What a good movie on the subject of Dracula. Scary. But not guts and blood every where scary. Just right. Lee`s voice is all that is needed to be a scary Dracula. Better than Bela Lugosi`s Dracula. That was a good Dracula movie. It is one of the hammer films best dracula movies. A horror movie that is rated PG. That is all that is needed to understand the content. I loved it! It was wonderful.
Jail Bait / Glen or Glenda
(2006)
JAIL BAIT (1954) is inept filmmaking of little value. The other half of this double feature is a classic by comparison. GLEN OR GLENDA (1953) - Bela Lugosi, Edward Wood Jr., Dolores Fuller, Lyle Talbot, 'Tommy' Haynes, Conrad Brooks Infamous movie that began Ed Wood's reign as "worst director of all time" is an autobiographic semi-documentary on transvestism (now called "crossdressing"). Wood as Glen also boldly appears in his second self, here named Glenda. Fuller,…

Plan 9 from Outer Space
(2008)
Ed Wood's cult classic has been hailed as the worst film of all time, but it's one of the most hilariously entertaining movies you'll ever see. Aliens from outer space reanimate the Earth's dead in an attempt to save the human race. With string-powered flying saucers, laughable dialogue, shrewd alien logic and priceless special effects, they can't go wrong. Or can they? (Hint: They do.) Plan 9 is a movie so beautifully bad, it's great. Now you can watch it in color…
The Bela Lugosi Box - 15 Frightful Films
(2006)
In this creepy collection of 15 feature films, Bela Lugosi's villainous versatility is shown off to its best advantage with powerful performances that span more than four decades - from the silent cinema through the Ed Wood years. Most are outright horror films, but some are melodramas, detective stories, and even a few borderline comedies. Lugosi was, of course, the definitive Dracula - a role he created on the Broadway stage in 1927 and immortalized on film in 1931. But Bela was so much more than…

Human Monster
(1994)
First off, I am reviewing the Roan release of this movie, which comes on a double bill with Mystery Liner. As is always the case with Roan, the digital restoration is top notch. You will not see a better release of this title, and although it is pricier than the Alpha release, it is the only version to consider. Roan is one of the few companies that give old, forgotten gems the prestige treatment they deserve. And this film truly deserves the prestige treatment. One thing the old poverty row studios…

Lon Chaney, Jr. portrays Larry Talbot, who returns to his father's (Claude Rains) castle in Wales and meets a beautiful woman (Evelyn Ankers). One fateful night, Talbot escorts her to a local carnival where Jenny's fate is revealed by a mysterious gypsy fortune teller. The dreamlike atmospheres and elaborate settings combined with a chilling musical score make The World Man a masterpiece not only…

The Haunted World of Edward D. Wood Jr.
(2002)
How could it be that Ed Wood, Jr., the young man who wore a woman's bra and panties at the Battle of Tarawa in World War II, went on to become the Orson Welles of low-budget films? Through film clips, still photos and extensive interviews with the bizarre cadre of actors, ministers and girlfriends who were involved in such projects as Woods' "Plan 9 from Outer Space" and "Glen or Glenda?," this feature film explores the man and the cult legend that has sprung up since…

The Monster Maker
(2002)
Hollywood generally produced two varieties of horror films during the 1940s. RKO took the lead with the subtle creations of producer Val Lewton, who specialized in creating a mounting sense of unease through implication instead of specification. Universal, which had been so innovative earlier, generally recycled its earlier creations in a series of sequels, rehashes, and "monster rally" movies that saw every creature from Frankenstein's monster to the wolf man to Dracula under the…
Gothic Horror
(2005)
ALPHA VIDEO's GOTHIC HORROR consists of 10 DVDs packaged in a hardbound, cloth-covered case. As with most of this company's product, film stock is unrestored and "extras" non-existent. With a couple of modern throwaways in the mix this one's a padded collection of primarily mediocrities. Fans of Italian actress Barbara Steele will however be satisfied: she appears in three of these. One worth singling out is CARNIVAL OF SOULS-- an absolute classic that's the lone directorial effort of Herk Harvey…
