The Corpse Vanishes--Lorenz (Bela Lugosi) kills innocent women to keep his wife young by pumping their blood into her body. Perhaps the most horrific of Bela Lugosi's Monogram series, it is also the silliest in many ways, especially when the audience finds Bela sleeping in a coffin for no discernable reason. 1942 - USA - 64 min The Devil Bat--Features Bela Lugosi as a chemist who plots an elaborate revenge scheme on his business partners, whom he feels have cheated him out of his share. The time is the 1950s, and the hottest comedy act in Hollywood is Martin and Lewis. Taking full advantage of the trend, Dean Martin look-alike Duke Mitchell and his partner, Jerry Lewis clone Sammy Petrillo, play a pair of nightclub performers who fall out of a plane and find themselves stranded on a jungle island. They discover Bela Lugosi, who is experimenting with a serum that turns people into gorillas! Also included: Interview with star Sammy Petrillo.

We are treated to eavesdropping on a cabal of fifth column industrialist leaders snickering over their misdeeds. So is this going to be a two dimensional sabotage movie where the good guys figure out whom the bad guys are just in time to save the bacon? No. This is more insidious. It looks like the cabal has another secret that will be detected and corrected, not out of patriotism but revenge. Can you guess the secret before it is played out? Bela Lugosi gets to make his signature light on his eyes…

I never saw this film growing up and I'm sure it was because of the confusion with the earlier classic Universal film with the same title starring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi(1934). 'The Black Cat' listed here is a murder/mystery/comedy from 1941. The film stars Basil Rathbone and Bela Lugosi in a fun supporting character. I did like this fun film full of secret passages and things that go bump in the night. This is available on DVD on a 2 disc set called Universal Horror and it…

I admit a fondness for this film having seen it countless times on tv in the early 1960's. Back then FAMOUS MONSTERS was THE magazine and Bela WAS Bela! I'm really glad that I was a part of such things, and so, hold this B-movie favorite on the HORROR/CAMP? pedistal. The plot?...Bela with help from dwarf Angelo Rossito capture would-be dead brides-to-be in order to extract fluids from them to keep his aging wife alive. The cost of the ALPHA dvd is minimal and the overall quality is quite…

Diabolical! Fiendish! Horrorific! Legendary horror icon Bela Lugosi (Dracula) stars as Dr. Eric Vornoff, who with Lobo (Tor Johnson), a crazed man-beast servant, is conducting flesh-burning radiation experiments in an attempt to create a legion of atomic supermen. Co-written, produced and directed by cult filmmaker Ed Wood, Jr., "Bride of the Monster" includes Ed's infamous stable of players: Dolores Fuller (Glen or Glenda?, Jailbait), Tor Johnson and Paul Marco (Plan 9 From Outer…

An all time B-movie classic explodes on the screen in all its cheesy glory! Ed Wood (Plan 9 From Outer Space) directs screen legend Bela Lugosi in a bizarre tale of a mad scientist who, along with his servant Lobo (the gigantic Swedish wrestler Tor Johnson, in a role he was born to play), attempts to create an army of superhuman mutants. Features the famous scene in which Lugosi "wrestles" with a giant rubber octopus. There are thrills (and laughs) aplenty in this enduring and endearing…

Classic Horror Movie: The Corpse Vanishes (1942) A Mad Scientist Love Story Starring Bela Lugosi

Starring b-movie superstar Bela Lugosi (Plan 9 from Outer Space), The Corpse Vanishes is the consummate nineteen forties horror movie. The suitably disgusting premise is that a youth potion can be made from the blood of virgins. The capture of innocent girls by Lugosi fuels the narrative while all the spooky fun goes on nonstop. Mad scientists, kidnapping, poisons and immortality tonics abound in this freaky black and white scarefest!

Another great release from the Lugosi estate. Print quality is down a little from the first release, but is probably as good as it gets. Apparantly, there are no more to come, which is a very sad state of affairs. My greatest wish would be for the Lugosi Estate to release some of his other public domain films that are so hard to get a decent release of. The special features are excellent.

The black and white Monogram picture was also known as, "The East Side Kids Meet Bela Lugosi," a cumbersome title at best! It's the 1943 follow-up to "Spooks Run Wild," another Bowery Boys/Lugosi romp which was popular two years earlier. East Side Kids - Spooks Run Wild This one begins a little slow but gets much better as it moves along. Leo Gorcey's sister, (played by Ava Gardner!), is getting married to a guy who has bought a fixer-upper home for the two to live…
