Unhuman (Thorkranong Sirchua, 2002)
Thai Predator-meets-Parts ripoff that doesn’t even have an IMDB page at this point (so sorry, folks, my usual chunky blend of trivia and obscure other films that actors have appeared in will be absent for this one). And since the copy I saw didn’t have subtitles for the credits (a practice which drives me up the wall—are you listening, DVD distribution companies?), I can’t tell you who any of these folks are anyway. Which is depressing, because as is usually the case with Thai films, the lead actresses in this are hot, hot, hot. In any case, the plot involves a police inspector, a doctor, and a group of high school kids who all witness something crashing to Earth during a meteor shower. A guy from the local mental hospital swears it was a spaceship, there’s a big government cover-up, and aliens are running loose. Sure enough, a local girl gets kidnapped whilst bathing in the lake, people start dying, you know. The usual. All well and good, until inspector/doctor/kids start finding out some stuff about that mental hospital that seems kinda fishy…
I’m usually a big fan of Thai horror films, but this is so derivative it’s not even funny. Worse yet, the special effects are awful. I’m talking Bill Rebane level of awful here (e.g., the Volkswagen with legs in The Giant Spider Invasion). I haven’t seen rubber suits that obvious since… okay. I’ve never seen rubber suits that obvious in something that wasn’t meant to be a parody. What really gets my goat is that up until the rubber suits pop up, despite it being an obvious Predator ripoff, Unhuman had all the necessary atmosphere to make it well worth your time. Unfortunately, once it derails, it never gets back on its feet. * ½
