Review of Halloween

My personal favorite, this movie could be considered the first real slasher flick as it predates a great many horror franchises. This John Carpenter and Debra Hill collaboration was once the highest grossing independant film in history, and spawned seven sequels, six with notorious serial killer Michael Myers as the villain. Donald Pleasance stars in the best role of his career as Michael's psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis, the only man who knows how evil Michael is. This classic thriller was also responsible for the launch of Jamie Lee Curtis as a star in the horror genre. Setting the standard for what horror should be, Halloween is a movie that no horror fan should live without.

In terms of pure shock value, this is the scariest movie ever made. I had about 12 heart attacks watching this movie; every scare is timed PERFECTLY. Most horror movies are extremely lucky to get 4 good scares in them, this one had at least triple that. The closest thing to it would be Evil Dead, which had around 8 good jump scares, Candyman, which had about 7, and Nightmare on Elm Street which had about 5. It won't give you nightmares like Jacob's Ladder(the primary inspiration for Silent Hill), have you up all night with the lights on waiting for ghost(see The Eye), and it doesn't have atmosphere that will make your skin crawl like The Shining or Session 9. In fact I laughed off all the scares as soon as the movie was done. However, for 90 minutes you are going to be jumping out of your seat every 5 minutes. It's a shame John Carpenter never came remotely close to matching this movie. The Fog had maybe 4 good scares, In the Mouth of Madness had maybe 3, and Christine had one. Dunno how he earned the title of "Master of Suspense" with this movie alone, especially considering Wes Craven and Dario Argento both did at least a dozen good horror movies each and George Romero boasts a lot more good horrors than Carpenter. Still, the original Halloween is a fucking masterpiece. Any horror director worth his salt should be timing every suspense build-up and scare in this movie with a stopwatch.

The guy on October 6 is an idiot. I partly agree with him on the Halloween part, but he said Evil Dead was scary. I am Matt Garosin, the Michael Myers in number 5 of the Halloween series. I will say, the 5th one isn't one of the better ones, but their all good.
