- Wes Craven's 1984 horror film is a better movie than it is generally credited for being. Forget the tawdry sequels; this highly original, almost surrealist work stars Robert Englund as a mutilated monster who kills teenagers during their dreams. Craven, who only directed one Elm Street sequel (Wes Craven's New Nightmare), takes the Hitchcockian step of layering in psychological explanations for the terror and then proving them all irrelevant in the face of mindless evil. The horror in the film is emotionally raw, in contrast to the overimaginative set pieces of most of the sequels that followed; and the final scene is as deeply unsettling as anything Luis Buñuel ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh

This is truly one of my favorite horror movies of all time!!! :) Freddy Kreuger is truly my all-time favorite bad-ass killer this movie continues to excite me over and over again!

Freddy kicks so much ass!
Nightmare on eml street part1 is my favourite althouh the best murder is in part 3. unlike the friday series every freddy movie has a different plot which makes the series the best horror movies ever!

I like it more than Halloween, even though it's not nearly as scary. To this day, this is Wes Craven's best movie. Freddie Krueger is the very personification of evil.

What can I say... This was the greatest horror movie I've ever seen! For an early 80's movie, the special effects are excellent! So much better than any Halloween or Friday The 13th movie! It has the greatest sequels too! Freddy is so freaky I had nightmares of him for months! I am getting the box set in a few days and I can't wait! My favorite death is Johnny's. It's sssssssssooooooooo cool! I love this movie! You might as well be dead if do not see this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of my favorites...I loved this show since I was a kid. I like Freddy so much that I called his 1-900 number a dozen times not realizing it costed money...lol One of the scariest parts in this movie is when Nancy is dreaming and she sees Tina getting dragged down the cellar in the school in a corpse bag...that gives me the creeps still. And I always had trouble bathing after seeing this, hoping nothing comes up from the drain. LOL!!!! This show rocks. I wanna get the DVD still.

Fantastic take on the boogie man. Though in later films Fredy turns into a huge smartass this one has classic one liners and the special effects especially for the Johnny Depp kill scene are magnificent and this remains an absolute classic.

this is the film that put wes craven on the map but that film should of been last house on the left as nightmare on elm street isnt even in my top 5 wes cravne films and it is one of the most overated horror films ever i'm sure it was neat for it's day but unlike halloween and TCM this film aged with time dont get me wrong though it is decent has some neat kills and excellent acting especially by the female character and by robert england and som of the atmosphere is neat along with the score and the story is also fairly good but im not a huge freddy fan and i'm glad jason beat him by the way im Nemesis and this is my first review

I love this movie! Even though I barely discovered that There WAS a movie called Nightmare on elm street. Yea im 13 years old and am a girl, I love this movie. I laugh at it all the time.

I liked this movie too, with all its action and all. But i don't think that kids being killed in their sleep sounds very freightning. Sounds kinda panzy. but i liked it. Jason movies are better though.
