Animal (2014)

Animal (2014) is an American thriller horror movie that was shot in Manchester, Connecticut. Director Brett Simmons (Husk (2011), Mark of Love (2009), The Monkey’s Paw (2013)) did not do such a great job as he did in his last movie, The Monkey’s Paw. Animal contains lots of blood, violence, gore, bad language, suspense and some scary and intense scenes.

Animal is about a group of friends that are being hunted by an unknown beast. The beast captures Barbara (Eve - Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), xXx (2002), Blade II (2002)) and kills her. Barbara’s friends ran for their lives and find an abandoned house. Soon after five friends came to the same woods for a camping trip and disobeyed the warning signs and hiked their way to their destination. Jeff and Alissa usually came to the forest as kids. Upon their trip through the woods, Matt (Jeremy Sumpter - Peter Pan (2003), Frailty (2001), Friday Night Lights (2006)) finds a backpack and Mandy (Elizabeth Gillies - Killing Daddy (2014), Victorious (2010), The Clique (2008)) finds a beast/creature eating a human corpse. The creature attacks Mandy and wounds her after she went off trial. Jeff was killed by the creature after he saves Mandy from it. Jeff’s friends ran just like the group before them and escaped into the abandoned house.

Jeff’s step sister Alissa, Matt, Sean and Jeff’s girlfriend Mandy met Vicky, Carl and Douglas (Amaury Nolasco) in the house. Matt plays the hero and tries to go for help while Carl and Sean distract the creature, but the plan fails, and Matt is injured by the creature. Matt was trying to tell the group something about the creature, but Douglas beats Matt until he’s dead. Douglas killed Matt because he knows Matt was severely injured, and he wants to feed Matt to the beast in an effort to distract the creature once again so they can escape. Douglas’ plan fails. The creature eats him, and his friends ran to the basement for shelter. Alissa lures the creature to a bedroom where she attempts to light it on fire with kerosene she had found earlier. Carl sacrificed himself in the basement so that his friends can escape when a second creature paid them a visit in the basement.

The girls are always the last ones to go. Vicky and Sean are eaten by the creature in the basement, and Mandy and Alissa runs out of the house in an effort to save themselves from the bloodthirsty eating monsters. The monster captures Alissa and Mandy manages to escape or so I think.

I gave this movie a five because it was a nice watch, but it was too much of a cliche. It was entertaining for a rainy day, but it is not something I would tell someone to watch. The acting was okay, and the cast was great but the storyline has been told too many times before.
