Review of Beastly Boyz: A Twisted Tale of Revenge

  • Rachel a beautiful young artist is murdered at her secluded lake front house by a group of soulless killers. Enraged and shocked by his sister s senseless murder Rachel s brother Travis vows to avenge her murder and punish her killers one by one even if it costs him his soul.Prolific cult filmmaker David DeCoteau unleashes a new diabolical experiment in extreme and provocative horror with Beastly Boyz a twisted tale of revenge. With a retro 70 s grindhouse style and a dreamlike European sensibility this Dark and fetishistic tale (mondo-digital.com) is reminiscent of the films of controversioal French shock-master Jean Rolling. With limited dialogue and lods of visceral imagery Beastly Boyz is a unique and truly original bizarre excursion into perversion!System Requirements:Running Time: 75 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA/EROTIC Rating: AO UPC: 631008065595 Manufacturer No: CQC655

    A small masterwork

David DeCoteau is one of the most imaginative and talented independent film directors working today and BEASTLY BOYS is a quiet little example of his skills. DeCoteau often works on incredibly small budgets, but he still manages to get so much onto the screen. BEASTLY BOYS was a true labor of love for DeCoteau, financed entirely with his own money. He has certainly made a film that is far different from any of his other films. This one has a much harder edge and seems like a hybrid between an art house film, soft-core (homo)erotica and a 1970's grindhouse exploitation flick. The results are disturbing, beautiful and astonishing. The film transfer has a few problems (the film was shot on 16mm) but this only adds to the intense, voyeristic mood that DeCoteau has created in his film. The DVD package is extremely well put together. The edition I bought is limited and signed by DeCoteau and contains an extensive and revealing "making of" documentary that shows us rare footage of DeCoteau at work. It is the best behind the scenes material on a DeCoteau film since VOODOO ACADEMY. As usual, the directors commentary is insightful and lots of fun. While this film lacks the sophistication of THE BROTHERHOOD and the technical polish of KILLER BASH, I believe it will hold up well over time and be considered one of his best and most interesting efforts. It is not a film that will have a wide audience appeal but for those of us who have a genuine love for low budget independent film making that is willing to take risks and be a bit different, this one is a real gem.

    Mesmerizing quality

The film is carried by long and lingering photographic scenes and background music. There is no dialog, only a few words of voice-over to give some structure. Be prepared for a sort of mesmerizing cinematic poem with rather primal tensions or don't bother. This is not for everyone.

I think it is very beautiful and I like it a lot. It is a low-budget artistic "minimalist" experiment that succeeds very well.

    Even DeCoteau fans: don't bother!

It may come as no surprise to anyone that DeCoteau films will win no great awards, but they are cheesy, boy sleazy fun. Usually the plots are thin horror re-makes, which anyone who watches them forgives in exchange for the eye candy. Now, that said (and yes, I own all the "Horror-for-girls " movies), avoid this movie by all means. It is unbearable. Uncut direction's version means just that: little to no editing where there should be some. I don't mind the lingering shots on the main actor (yes, he is pretty) but good god man! the first 14 minutes is the kid doing the same exercises from different angles repeated over and over (was decoteau allowing time for running to the bathroom?). The plot is even more minimal than other decoteau films: a boy seeks revenge on his sister's killers (she tells him this in a badly done ADR sequence). So he runs around killing each abuser of his sister. The cliched and horribly written voice overs are the only script. There is no other dialogue in the movie. Honestly...I think coteacu wanted to see his lead working out and killing people: he wrote the script later based on the footaqe.

Even the lead's hotness and the co-actors can't save this movie. It barely ranks as cheesey or horror. Hi s liner notes say no studio wanted to give him money for this: this film is evidence of why not
