I hope someone at the top knows to reconstruct the original, uncut, theatrical version of this great movie for the Blu-ray release. Many don’t realize that every “Masterpiece”, “Legends”, etc. version of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho we’ve been getting on home video for the past umpteenth years has been an edited-for-television version of it.
That’s when they cut several frames of the shot of Norman’s POV of Marion (Janet Leigh) disrobing before her shower and cut what were slightly more and/or longer shots of Norman’s bloody hands as he cleans up after Mother…
These are not insignificant edits. Hitchcock made sure those moments were edited to the exact frame he wanted in order to create a specific and devilish response in the audience.
Well, for some reason the 1970s edited-for-television version has been taken as the official version all these years and used for the home video/DVD releases. Truly an unforgivable oversight, unless the original, uncut, theatrical version simply no longer exists. Which would be a shame.
