Review of Before I Say Goodbye

  • To catch a killer youve got to follow the money, no matter where, or to whom, it leads. Sean Young (No Way Out) stars in this riveting thriller based on the #1 best-selling novel by Mary Higgins Clark, the "Queen of Suspense."

Prominent politician "Mac" MacDermott (Lloyd Bochner) has been grooming his granddaughter Nell (Young) to follow in his footsteps. Unfortunately, Nell's architect husband Adam is under investigation for his part in an infamous real estate and construction scam. When Adam and several business associates die in a fiery explosion, Nell vows to clear his name, enlisting the help of a detective (Peter DeLuise) and a mysterious medium who claims she can contact Adam from beyond the grave. But as Nell delves deeper and learns the truth about her husband's life - and death - she becomes the target of a shocking conspiracy!

    A Perfect Disappointment

I like a special type of book when I'm commuting. The plot should have plenty of action, the sillier and more predictable the better. The characters should be easily identifiable and two-dimensional (one-dimensionable is even better). In short, the book should distract me without really keeping me from paying attention to the road. This book was perfect.

So why was I disappointed? The description of the novel on the back of the case said that after her husband's death, Nell begins to suspect "fowl play." There were no chickens in the book. I felt cheated.

MARY HIGGINS CLARK HITS THE SCREEN

I was always a fan of MURDER SHE WROTE, trying to outguess the hero in discovering who the murderer was. You'll find the same kind of mindless enjoyment in this adaptation of Mary Higgins Clark's novel. Sean Young plays an aspiring congresswoman whose selfish architect husband (Christopher Shyer) objects to her returning to the political scene. Her father is a congressman (Lloyd Bochner), so it seems natural to follow in his footsteps. But then hubby's boat explodes and Young is left a widower, but someone's trying to kill her! Peter Deluise is the chunky detective who tries to get to the bottom of the crimes. You won't have a whole lot of trouble figuring out the outcome, but it's fun and well performed.
