Nightmare falls flat on this sequel.

Expectations were high for this sequel to the much praised first movie.
I'm afraid this is where the series went right down the toilet.
Sorry Freddy loyalists there were only two decent movies in the entire series.
    The original and part three.
This one just has the usual bad acting, bad script, bad fx, pretty much bad everything.
Freddy's knives are in need of some sharpening.

    More thriller than horror

Many fans of the franchise hate the second installment because it doesn't pick up where the first movie left off and instead of killing people directly, Freddy uses the body of a teenager to do the killing for him. Thus the entire structure of this movie is different from the first and from all the Nightmare on Elm movies that came after.

That being said, I personally enjoy this movie as much as the others. While it's not scary in the 'I hear a noise and will walk outside in the middle of the night to see what it is even though I thought I saw a strange man with knives for a hand' tradition, it's a terrific psychological thriller. A combination of murder, the psychological breakdown of a teenager who finds himself murdering friends on behalf of Freddy, sadomasochism (leather bound teacher gets a whipping; he also enjoys degrading his male students), undertones of homosexuality (the teen's teacher frequents gay bars), are among the themes that give this movie life.

Additionally the instrumental musical score is one of the best in the series.

Unfortunately the ending is quite weak and I wish they had done a better job at casting the teen's girlfriend. These are the major drawbacks of this movie.

In summary, this installment isn't for everybody. It's probably not for an average horror fan. But if you're into twisted psychology, you might find it worth watching.

    A Cool Idea...Poor Execution

The idea for ANOES 2 is pretty interesting, and it would completely alter the overall structure of the franchise, but it was WAY too early for something like this. The idea of having Freddy transcend the dream world and appear in our own is something that shows up in Freddy's Dead and the finally Freddy Vs. Jason, it didn't belong in ANOES 2.

Because Craven wasn't involved in this one, the storyline is quite streamlined, and the characters (while somewhat likable are quite one dimensional).

Overall, ANOES 2 doesn't hit the nail on the head, but the idea behind it was ahead of its time (probably in a bad way more than a good one).
