Review of Stephen King's It [VHS]

Is there anything scarier than clowns? Of course not. And who knows scary better than Stephen King? You see where we're going. It puts a malevolent clown (given demented life by a powdered, red-nosed Tim Curry) front and center, as King's fat novel gets the TV-movie treatment. Even at three hours plus, the action is condensed, but an engaging Stand by Me vibe prevails for much of the running time. The seven main characters, as adolescents, conquered a force of pure evil in their Maine hometown. Now, the cackling Pennywise is back, and they must come home to fight him--or, should we say, It--again. Admitting the TV-movie trappings and sometimes hysterical performances, this is a genuinely gripping thriller. As so often with King, the basic idea (the bond formed during a childhood trauma) is clean and powerful, a lifeline anchored in reality that leads us to the supernatural. --Robert Horton

    My fav stephen king movie

I love this movie. Tim Curry really brought Pennywise the Clown to life, he had everything: he was scary and funny. The young actors the played the kids were all great the brought they characters to life and did they adult actors well. they cast the story and everything in this movie was perfect. if you are afraid of clowns then this movie is something that you dont need to watch. stephen king fans this movie is great. this movie while not all like the book does the book justice. i love this movie and i think that lots of people would enjoy this movie.

One of the scariest horror movies ever

I really love this movie as a kid. This is one of the best movies ever based on a book from Stephen King. The story is just great, the kids are playing really convincing and the other actors were also great. This movie still gives me huge youth sentiment as I watch it.

I think the first part of the movie was the best, were they are attacked by the monster and attack it back. The middle part was also good, but not as good as the first part. A lot of this actors who play the children are just amazingly convincing. The adults also play good, but not superb. The clown then again was just amazing, I don't think anyone could have played it more scarring. This clown also was a character I frequently saw again while having nightmares in my teenage years.

I would have given this movie 5 stars, but because of the ending (which was pretty weak to say the least) I give it 4 stars.

    "IT" Still Has It!

Though "IT" is a movie made for TV, back in 1990, and is lengthy at a whopping 187 minutes (originally shown over 2 nights, at 2 hours each!), IT still holds up to the test of time. My kids were only 6 and 4 when this first came out, and though I doubt I let them watch it that soon, IT became one of their favorite movies of all time, even through today! They were VERY excited I got this on DVD! When horrorific clowns are discussed, Tim Curry's "Pennywise" the Clown, will always stand out as the deliciously evil, sadistic clown-to-avoid! After all these years, he can still give us the creeps!
    Bravo!
"AH HA! AH HA! AH HA!"

    Loved IT!!!

It (1990) is one of Stephen King's shining (no pun intended) moments. Of course, I'm talking about the book, but I'm also talking about the movie. I love the setting of the movie (New England) which is so common with King's works, but the New England setting works especially well in this movie. If Pennywise the clown were haunting and terrorizing a big city, it wouldn't have worked as well. When watching the movie, it slowly dawns on the viewer to ask, "Why here? Derry, Maine?" Actually, Derry is a town in New Hampshire, but King creates a Derry, Maine in this film. I think that the acting of Richard Thomas is superb, as he really brings out a character in distress at times. His stuttering adds a special chill to the scenes, as this was a part of his childhood, and took place the same time his young brother, Georgie was killed. The movie is long, but that's because it's really 2 movies in 1 (30 years ago), then onto the present time. I think that this works very well, and gives the viewer a good feel for what the kids went through in facing Pennywise. A few flashbacks wouldn't have worked as well. I'm glad that the makers of the movie decided to show how these kids developed into their adult selves, whether it was through abusive parents, or being the victims of harrassment from their peers. I think that Pennywise's appearances in the film are not too much or too little. I think that it's better to show the villain less than show it more. This way, it keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat, and creates a feeling of appreciation without wearing out "IT'S" welcome. The very beginning of the movie features a scene that is very similar to John Carpenter's Halloween, as Pennywise is behind hung clothes on a clothes line. This was the perfect intro to Pennywise, and gets into the psyche of the viewer right away. Overall, IT is a very good movie for the horror aficionado. The music is done very well, too. 9/10
