The Bologna-man
"Somethings should stay dead" like this horrible piece of 80's slasher/ghost story movie with the very untalented Suzanna Love(director Ulli Lommel wife) and the late great John Carradine in one of those "I need the money" roles, and tells the story of a brother and sister who see their mother beat by a lover and the son kills him as the sister watches in a mirror. Years later the grown children find the mirror and after it is broken, the pieces still have the tint of murder in them and a round of gory murders follow. Pure cheese and trash from the man who would go on to give us "The Green River Killer" and other bottom of the rung "Movies"
PURE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bad, just plain bad
I watched this movie and was horrified that this movie even made it to DVD. It was boring and very corney to sit and watch. I should have shut this movie off half way through the movie, but I thought I would give it a try and see if something ever happens in this movie. It didn't. It was boring, boring, boring. Don't waste your time or money on this one. Get the new Boogeyman and you will enjoy a few scares there.

Not the movie I thought it was........
When I was a little kid, I saw THE BOOGYMAN in our local video store many times. Something about the cover art made it seem like a really scary, "old school" Horror classic. Being the avid Horror fan that I am, I read about THE BOOGYMAN through the years yet I never saw it. So I decided to pick up a used copy (on VHS) online for a couple of bucks.
After watching THE BOOGYMAN, I think it's safe to say that my childhood ideas about the film (without actually watching it) were a lot more scary and interesting that the actual film.
THE BOOGYMAN starts off with a rather enjoyable scene of a drunk Mother and her abusive boyfriend (the movie never really makes it clear what his role was) tying up her Son to his bed while his Sister watches. For some reason, she wants peace and quiet while having "sexual adventures" with her boyfriend and thinks the only reasonable action to take is having her Son tied to his bed. His Sister gets mad (obviously this happens all the time, although it's another plot detail left hanging) and goes into the kitchen to get a knife to cut the ropes. Once free, the little boy grabs the knife from his Sister's and runs into his Mothers bedroom and stabs her "boyfriend" in the back a bunch of times. It's a scene that could have been well done but for some reason, it wasn't. Too much choppy camera work really "kills" the scene (excuse the bad pun) and ruins any feeling of tension considering it's a small boy doing the killing.
Anyways, fast forward 20 years later and the little boy and girl are all grown up and living with other family members on some distant farm. Once again, these are plot details left hanging and I would have liked to at least seen one or two scenes showing what happened to them over the years. Anyways, one night at the dinner table they get a letter in the mail from their Mother saying that she is dying and one of her last wishes is to see her kids again. Reading the letter sends the daughter into a bunch of cheap flash backs (basically old scenes reused) and makes the already strange Brother ('yup, he's still around and not locked up for killing his Mothers abusive lover 20 years ago) act even more strange than normal. If you ask me, it's a pointless scene because you never see any scene with their Mother in the rest of the movie. Not once do they visit their Mother and through the rest of the movie, the director acts like that letter never happened. Talk about major lot holes! The director could have used any other plot detail and it wouldn't have taken away anything major from the already messy plot.
Lets move along, shall we? The girl decides she has to face her fears (her husband doesn't like his wife having nightmares about her childhood) and decides she needs to go back to that house. They go there and she has a flash back in which forces her to smash a mirror that was in the same room when her Brother killed their Mom's lover. Smashing the mirror in turn sets free the killing spirit of the abusive Father. If the plot sounds all over the place, thats because it is! Messy, pointless and confusing.
Things don't start to really pick up until near the end of the film when people start dying in the typical (yet greatly needed) slasher style. This is the only enjoyable factor of the movie until the interesting if not pointless ending.
THE BOOGYMAN could have been a great slasher movie with a better director, larger budget and a more faster moving plot. However, it's all ruined because of these lacking and much needed details. If your looking for a good 'ol fashion "old school" Horror film you might be better off with the original FRIDAY THE 13th or TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. Heck, even check out a movie called MOTEL HELL over this mess!
The only people that could enjoy such rubbish as THE BOOGYMAN are Horror fans (such as myself) and gore hounds. Even gore hounds might be a little disappointed after watching this garbage. Three stars for a few interesting moments and enjoyable death scenes. Nothing of what I expected.
I guess they made a squeal which from what the other reviews on this website said was even worse than the original. I don't see how that can be possible considering THE BOOGYMAN was a total failure in my opinion.
Avoid this like a fart from your Grandmother at a family reunion! HA-HA! For only the most "hardcore" of Horror fans. Over and out!

The mirror crack'd.
This is the very first and original film of THE BOOGEYMAN (1980).
You may have heard of the "Boogeyman" in the John Carpenter film, HALLOWEEN (1978).
A young boy, Willie (Jay Wright) andayoung girl, Lacey (Natasha Schiano)have been caught watching through the outside window while their mother (Gillian Gordon) entertains a man (Howard Grant). She was taking her pantyhose off and putting them on the man. When the kids were caught, they are ordered to bed where the man proceeds to tie up Willie and gag him. Lacey was able to get a knife from the kitchen and untie the ropes from Willie. When Willie took the knife,he goes into his mother's bedroom and kills the man.
20 years later,Willie (Nicolas Love) and Lacey (Suzanna Love)go to church and they live with Uncle Ernest (Bill Rayburn) and Aunt Helen (Felicite Morgan). The memories of that horrible murder still haunt both of them. However, it is Willie who stays quiet and is still fascinated by knives.
When Lacie has a nightmare about her own brother killing her, Lacie's husband, Jake (Ron James)thinks it is a good idea to re-visit the old house where the murder accured. Once there, she looks into a mirror and finds out the spirit of the dead man--the Boogeyman is still around.
This is about as low-budget as a small film can get and I thought BEWARE THE BLOB (aka SON OFTHE BLOB,1972)was bad.
Nicolas Love and Suzanna Love are really brother and sister. Miss Love also has writing credit for the story.
John Carradine has a role.
Followed by the sequels:
Boogeyman II (1983)
Return of the Boogeyman (1994-straight to video)
Boogeyman: The Killer Compilation (2001-straight to video)
Remake: Boogeyman (2005)

The Sony version the Boogey Man is terrible.
This allegedly new digitally re-mastered version of 1980s "The Boogey Man" has replaced the original opening credits with computer generated, generic white lettering. And the video image is probably not as good as the original Anchor Bay release. The Anchor Bay version is still around so buy that one instead.
