Review of Killer Condom: The Rubber That Rubs You Out

  • Something's invading New York. Something terrifying. Something you've never seen before! It’s the rubber that rubs you out! H.R. Giger renders an incredible universe for director Martin Walz' explosive action sequences in this big budget favorite with lavish production values and a wicked, visionary sense of humor. Safe sex just got a lot more dangerous in this outrageous horror/noir/comedy. A college professor, Mr. Smirnoff (Ralf Wolter) lures an attractive female student, who is willing to do just about anything to improve her grade, to New York's Hotel Quickie, where he avails himself of one of the free condoms provided by the management. However, the prophylactic in question has sprouted teeth and has a taste for blood, and before long, the prof is suddenly missing his member. Assigned to investigate this strange case is detective Luigi Mackeroni (Udo Samel), a detective with something hidden in his closet. When Luigi and a prostitute take a room at the Hotel Quickie for some fun and games, the detective himself is attacked by the carnivorous rubber. Now much better acquainted with his new nemesis, Luigi has to take his revenge on the killer condom, while trying to brush off the advances of burly transvestite Babette (Leonard Lansink). Killer Condom, based on a comic book by German cartoonist Ralf Koenig, features special effects by bad-boy german auteur Jorg Buttgereit (Nekromantic, Schramm) and this uncut DVD comes fully loaded with a director’s commentary, Tour of Troma Studios, special public service announcements and the Troma Intelligence Test II!
    Description
  • If you can get past cheap special effects and New Yorkers suddenly spouting German, this bizarre black comedy horror spoof is an aggressively trashy hoot. There's a ravenous prophylactic taking a bite out of the Big Apple, and it's up to slovenly, tough-as-nails NYPD detective Udo Samel (resembling a skid row Bob Hoskins) to protect mankind from this sinister threat. Shot in bleeding, oversaturated color on the streets of New York City with an all-German cast, director Martin Walz fills his film with in-your-face sleaziness and references to everything from The Godfather to Psycho to Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. The mad mix of clichés swirl detective films, monster movies, cop dramas, and mad-scientist conspiracies into a bizarre midnight movie genre soup. Samel's lecherous, well-endowed, hard-boiled detective wears his gay pride like a dare. His insatiable appetite for rent boys and young hunks may affront some viewers, but the chain-smoking tough guy in the rumpled trenchcoat makes a great, unapologetic icon for the '90s. The snaggle-toothed condoms, which look like a cross between Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors and a sock puppet with teeth, were created by Germany's bad boy of horror, Jorge Buttgereit (Nekromantic). --Sean Axmaker

    Killer Condom Blows!

First off, the lame subtiles will drive you crazy. If your into homosextual situations then this movie is for you. I know it's Troma, but come on this is lame. Look for it used, don't spend over $7.00 for it.

A Condom Has To Do What A Condom Has To Do!

It may seem inexplicable.....I never believed this day would come.....No one thought it was more improbable than myself......

What's happening here? Yes, I'm getting ready to recommend a movie entitled "Killer Condom." I have divergent taste in film. I love the classics, experimental art films, independent and foreign films--highbrow stuff. But I also have a twisted side, I love a good "bad" movie too. As an adventurer, thus, I have collected several Troma titles--The Tox Box, Terror Firmer, Tromeo & Juliet and Sgt. Kabukiman to name just a few of the more recognizable DVDs. These are all films that I would recommend, surprisingly enough (at least to a certain audience). But for every decent Troma title, there are dozens of barely watchable ones. I knew "Killer Condom" was destined to be a disaster.

That's when the strangest thing happened, I enjoyed this movie. It is a genuinely clever German import! The detective story is a solid parody of classic noir. An actual plot holds the picture together, the performers are appealing, and the cheesy double entendres will have you laughing--not groaning. Then, of course, you also have the dreaded killer condom--so diabolical, so ridiculous, so toothy. It's a dream monster, a wonderful creation! You will cheer for our hero as he attempts to avenge his lost testicle!

Anyway, seriously--if this sounds like your kind of movie, I think you'll be surprised at how cohesive and entertaining this film really is. If it sounds terrible to you, I'm guessing you're not going to like it---head directly over to your copy of "Fried Green Tomatoes" and enjoy. KGHarris, 10/06.

    (Almost) A Cult Classic

What shocked me about Killer Condom was that it exceeded its low-budget expectations with a surprisingly intelligent and touching love story. So the effects weren't up to much? Pa! The central romance between hard-boiled detective Udo Samel and pretty-boy rent boy Marc Richter was genuinely affecting; the dialogue was spot-on and Martin Walz's direction (and Samel's performance in particular) were beautifully judged.

Typical Demonic Prophylactic Anti-Religion Comedy Genre Film

I just don't know where to start in reviewing this movie. I bought it not as a fan of Troma, but because I like seeing movies with bizarre new monsters. I have seen killer mutant turkey men ("Blood Feast"), gassy killer sheep ("Godmonster of Indian Flats"), and every kind of dinosaur, lizard, or reptile known to man. I have even seen killer puppets ("Attack of the Puppet People"), and killer mushrooms ("Matango, The Fungus of Terror".) So I felt pretty prepared for a killer condom, but discovered I was not.

The film was shot on location in New York by a bunch of Germans, and all dialogue is done in German, therefore you have to read subtitles. I don't mind the subtitles that much, but sometimes they blend in with light colored backgrounds and are tough to decipher. I guess dubbing wouldn't have hurt it any. The lead role is played by a German Police Detective ('Inspector Macaroni'), who is ostensibly from Sicily. If that isn't enough to make your head spin, he and he alone can fend off the killer condoms, in a wild and somewhat disgusting (go figure) plot that involves a transvestite singer named 'Bob', a crazy Chinese scientist who craves "red jelly", and, unfortunately, a religious fanatic. Some have seen the story as allegorical, but mostly it's really too shallow to be anything other than silly and disgusting.

The film starts off strongly, but is quite long and begins to be repetitive after about the first twenty minutes. I am not easily offended, but do take exception to the portrayal of religion towards the end of the film. The movie pretends to be permissive, but comes across at some points as simply denigrating religion. It was an unnecessary plot device that adds nothing to the plot, yet manages to offend or at least annoy. The portrayal of a US Presidential candidate as a corrupt philanderer would have offended as well, but it was made by Europeans during the Clinton administration, so I can see their point.

That's it for the bad; now for the good. The film IS a strikingly original production, and far outside the norms for Troma. The production values are better than average, with a few cheesy sets, but largely good locations. The characterizations are generally spot on and funny, as are the names of characters. The dialogue is consistently amusing (when they aren't on an anti-religion rant), and the latex killers are very entertaining to watch, even if not genuinely scary (watch especially for the autopsy scene.) The DVD has a lot of extras including a preview reel, a virtual tour of the Troma studios (which is generally pretty entertaining), and a special Public Service Announcement featuring Sgt. Kabukiman.

Three stars for originality, generally amusing plot points, and laughter inducing special effects.
