The Phantom of the Opera At the Paris Opera House new management has taken over. Among their many tasks they must also deal with a mysterious Opera Ghost , who has been tutoring the young chorus girl Christine Daae. The Phantom s plan? Christine will take over as the primary opera singer. However, in his way are the new managers, current prima donna Madam Carlotta, and Christine s lover, Raoul. As the Phantom gives Christine the gift of voice, she is torn between her allegiance to him and her love for Raoul.
The Phantom of the Opera is based on the novel by Gaston Leroux. It was directed by Rupert Julian and starsLon Cheney as the Phantom of the Opera. During production, Cheney did all his own make-up work, which was considered shocking and grotesque by audiences when the film premiered.
