Review of 2001 Maniacs

  • A remake of Herschell Gordon Lewis's 1960s gory classic TWO THOUSAND MANIACS! (which was inspired by of all things BRIGADOON) 2001 MANIACS follows a group of Northern college kids lured into the Southern town of Pleasant Valley to take part in the "Guts and Glory Jubilee" a celebration of the glory days of Dixie. Soon enough they realize that the "guts" might turn out to be their own as the crazed Southerners led by Mayor Buckman (Robert Englund) have planned festivities that involve killing and consuming the Yankee kids. A mix of 1960s splatterfest and 1980s sex-romp 2001 MANIACS has enough macabre absurdity to offend almost everyone-and delight horror fans everywhere.System Requirements:Running Time 87 Mins.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: HORROR Rating: R UPC: 031398185727 Manufacturer No: 19092

    pretty good low budget horror

i rented this movie cause some of the death scenes looked cool and they were the only thing that keep this from a 5 star is the annoying accents and the setting. if your a fan of blood and gore and dont mind a lower budget than usual you should enjoy this film. the ending death scene is very creative and original

    STRANGE BUT GOOD

This movie is really a strange one, but if you like B-horror flicks, this is the one for you! We couldn't turn the DVD off the first time we watched it because it was so amazingly ODD! A must-have for B-movie collectors!

Fans of campy horror films will enjoy it.

If you hold this movie up against standard horror classics like The Shining or Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you will be disappointed. However, if you're looking for a fun, gory romp for a late night - this will appeal to you. I especially enjoyed Robert Englund's performance, which almost justifies this movies' existence by itself.

    Are You Kiddin' Me?

What a waste of film stock! The only thing weaker than the script was the host of phony Southern accents. And the running gag of the hillbilly chasing the sheep over and over was just too stupid.

0 STARS: A cinematic atrocity of epic proportions.

Well, it's easy to see that the makers of this garbage don't like people from the south. As ridiculous as its premise is, sadly, that's not even the main reason that this movie is a zero. No, I don't like the movie for what it is. "2001" Maniacs is just plain stupid!! What I truly hate about this movie (and others like it) is its pathetic attempt to be funny, but what actually happens is that the movie turns into one corny and pathetic attempt at black humor. If it tried to be intelligent, that might be one thing, but this is as dumb and stupid of a movie as I've seen. Forget about horror if that's your thing because it's not here. If you like gore, I would go elsewhere. It might have been halfway entertaining to some people if it were funny, but this is just a brainless and heartless attempt to cash in on a script that is frankly getting quite tired. If this is as imaginative as one can be with this cannibalistic type of movie, then just give it a rest Hollywood...that goes for you too, Robert Englund!! Freddy, in part 8 of Nightmare on Elm Street (or however far they got in that series) is funnier than this trash!! "Don't take the movie too seriously" as one reviewer states...that's the understatement of the year. My advice would be that if you're serious about your horror, stay away from stuff like this. If you just like lame humor and mindless garbage, this should be a real treat for you! By the way, the acting was horrible, and that goes for you too again, Robert Englund...shame on you!!
