Review of Zodiac Rapist Grindhouse Double Feature
- Hard-boiled detective figures were a noteworthy staple in early 1970s grindhouse, manifesting themselves in some of the earliest hard action productions coming out of L. A. Characters like Nicky Butane, Sam Dobbs and Johnny Wadd preceded the neo-noir new wave launched by Hollywood blockbusters such as Chinatown (1974) and The Long Goodbye (1973) and proved successful enough with audiences to inspire sequels and spin-offs.
THE ZODIAC RAPIST (1971) starring JOHN HOLMES Dobbs is about to crack his toughest case getting into the pants of his secretary and teaching her a thing or two about taking dicktation. It s time for Sam to focus on tracking down the Zodiac serial rapist (superstar John Holmes) who has been making mincemeat of L.A. women.
SAM DOBBS AND THE GURU (1970) starring SUZANNE FIELDS, JUDY ANGEL Sam Dobbs and the Guru Gangbang opens with our implacable gumshoe ensconced in his rather no-frills headquarters. While his capable girl Friday (played by West Coast grindhouse regular Judy Angel) takes dictation from Dobbs, the detective fields a phone call from a mysterious femme fatale, who reports the presence of a rigid stiff floating in her swimming pool.
