Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street

  • Digitally remastered, this is the original Nightmare film that started it all. Written and directed by Wes Craven and starring Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, A Nightmare on Elm Street remains an innovative and shocking horror-fantasy.

    DVD Features:
    Audio Commentary
    Production Notes
    Theatrical Trailer

    Description
  • Wes Craven's 1984 horror film is a better movie than it is generally credited for being. Forget the tawdry sequels; this highly original, almost surrealist work stars Robert Englund as a mutilated monster who kills teenagers during their dreams. Craven, who only directed one Elm Street sequel (Wes Craven's New Nightmare), takes the Hitchcockian step of layering in psychological explanations for the terror and then proving them all irrelevant in the face of mindless evil. The horror in the film is emotionally raw, in contrast to the overimaginative set pieces of most of the sequels that followed; and the final scene is as deeply unsettling as anything Luis Buñuel ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh

    Let the nightmares begin.

I saw this one when I was still a teenager.
One of the best slasher movies ever made.
Untouchable even today it spawned a ton of sequels that stunk, (except part 3).
Still, the original is a master(slasherpiece)piece.
Freddy was just evil and disgusting in this movie. Too bad he became so comical in the sequels.
He was truly terrifying in the original.
A great script, a great idea, a great cast. Johnny Depp!!!!!!!!!
He looks out of place in this movie considering his later works of genius.
It's still good to see where they got their start.
    There are three.........and only three.
Nightmare on Elm St. part one.
    The original Halloween.
And Friday the 13th part 2.
The best of the best when it comes to the horror, slasher movies.
Highly recommended for adults not kids.

    The Groundbreaker

A Nightmare on Elm Street is a film that focuses on what happens when people do not communicate well. It preys on the universal fear of the unknown, and what the unknown will bring. This is why ANOES is a classic film.

Craven has created a cast of characters that mesh together very well, and of course Robert Englund brings his own style to the archetypal Freddy Kreuger.

Additionally, the extras on these DVDs are RAD, there is so much stuff to discover that you'll be watching them for a long time. It also features an option that puts facts up while you're watching the film, you can select the facts and it will then show the bonus feature that accompanies it.

Overall, ANOES is the groundbreaker for the series, and many other horror films to follow it. Scared the crap out of me as a kid, and it still does.

How an idea can sell a film - a fine example of high concept

There was a time when a film's title and the idea of a guy with knives on his fingers could make a film a box office hit and spawn 10 sequels. A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of those. Whatever you think about this stuff, there is no underestimating that this made New Line Cinema into a juggernaut distribution company. It launched the career of Johnny Depp as did the sequels for a number of directors.

The premise is simple. A killer stalks victims in their dreams and kills them. Kids in a neighbourhood start to have the same dream and start dying. Cue lots of parents blaming the kids and strange things happening.

Looking back this is a low-budget film. The effects sequences are straight out of mom and dad's basement but are effective. Everyone knows that this film was sold on the title and the premise alone. All Wes Craven had to do was film it. The acting is superbad for most of it, the music 80s synthesizer done by Uncle Bob and most of it is shot in the school basement. At the same time nobody can say it's short on creativity. This is a classic Wes Craven and Freddy became a household name.

At the end of the day it just goes to show how a brainchild clicks and everybody wants to see it, no matter how hammy it gets.
