Review of Vampires

  • Talk about an opening. The first few minutes of John Carpenter's Vampires--in which James Woods's vampire killer leads a dawn raid on a New Mexico "goon nest" of bloodsuckers--not only suggests a horror movie that will not pull any punches, it even evokes some of the more disturbing dream-memories of American Westerns. Muscular and uncompromised, the sequence suggests a new Carpenter classic unraveling before one's eyes. Well, dream on. Things don't quite work out that way, but this is still a film to reckon with. There are a few serious (and surprising) misjudgments on the director's part, particularly a mishandling of Sheryl Lee's role as a prostitute poisoned by the bite of a "master vampire" (who pretty much wiped out Woods's team of goon terminators). But aside from some weaknesses, the action is jolting, the suggested complicity of the Catholic Church in destroying monsters is provocative, and the traces of Howard Hawks's continuing influence on Carpenter's storytelling are in evidence. --Tom Keogh

    Mediocre vampire movie.

This movie came free with my dvd player back in the day.
    It's ok.
    Just ok.
You can't even begin to compare this to say...... Interview With The Vampire.
Still, it's a decent enough way to kill an evening.
Worth a rental for vampire freaks.
Otherwise I can't really recommend this one.
The script, acting, story, FX are all just so so.

    Humor, gore and fright

This movie has humor, gore and some scary scenes. As a horror movie it is a little lame, but as a vampire movie it is a nice change in plot.

The End Was Pretty Good... I Mean The Credits.

Maybe because it was going to be over soon, it felt like this movie was more enjoyable at the end. The first half of this movie is pretty lame. I thought that James Woods wasn't up to his usual par. Daniel Baldwin was great, but that's because he is kind of a B-List actor and this is a B-List movie. It felt like it should have been on the USA Network or something. There were some cool things to this movie. The plot was pretty good, not the best story but fairly good. Overall I think it could have been better if it had better actors and was a little more scary. It was too rock & roll for me. I would have liked it more if it was creepy. They had a good premise to make it creepy, especially since the church was involved and I find the church to be creepy. Exorcism is a creepy premise too, but they wasted all of these things in favor of action. 3 stars because the ending was pretty good... and it was finally over.

    Vampires

Well, this is a different, modern day take on the old vampire movies. It starts with a bang and continues almost non stop with only short breaks of explanation in between. A band of vampire hunters "controlled" by the church are on the trail of the leader of the undead. He is searching for an ancient cross that will give vampires the ability to walk in daylight. Amazingly James Woods has brought some gravatis to this production, though I cannot get rid of the feeling that he has his tongue firmly wedged in his cheek while this is all going on. Fun with much gore.
