Luis Alfredo Garavito Cubillos, aka “The Beast” (“The Beast”) or “Tribilin” (Latin American Spanish translation of the Disney “Goofy”) (born January 25, 1957 in Genova, Quindio, Colombia) is Colombia’s rapist and serial murderer. In 1999, “I rape and murder” admitted Luis Garavito to the deaths of young people totaling 140. The number of victims, based on the location of the skeletons that appear on maps Garavito drew in prison, could exceed 300. It has been described by local media as “the worst serial murderer in the world” by the high number of victims.

Once captured, Garavito was sentenced to the maximum penalty available in Colombia, which was 30. However, as he confessed to the crimes and helped authorities locate bodies, Colombian law allowed him to apply for special benefits, including historical reduced sentence to 22 years and events possibly earlier version for greater cooperation and good behavior.

In later years, Colombians felt increasingly alarmed due to early release of Garavito, it is not enough punishment for historical crimes. Colombian law originally had no way to extend the penalty, because the cases of serial murderers and Garavito had no legal precedent in the country and the legal system therefore properly could not deal with this case. In late 2006, however, judicial review in cases against different Garavito local historical jurisdictions found that his sentence could be extended and delayed release due to the existence of crimes he did not admit to and was not condemned for previously.

Luis Alfredo Garavito is the eldest of seven brothers and suffered physical and emotional apparent abuse by his father. In his testimony, he described himself as being a victim of sexual abuse when younger.

Victims Garavito were poor children, children of peasants, street children, ages 8 and 16. Then Garavito approached them on the street or in the field and offered gifts and small amounts of money. He took the kids for a walk then, raped them, cut off their neck, and usually then dismembered their bodies. Most of the children showed signs of torture. Garavito was arrested on April 22, 1999. He confessed to killing 140 children. However, he is still under investigation for the murder of 172 children in over 59 cities in Colombia.

He was convicted in 138 of the 172 cases, the others are in progress. Convictions for these 138 cases add to 1.853 years and 9 days of imprisonment. Due to restrictions of Colombian law, however, he can not be imprisoned for over 30 years. And because he helped authorities in finding the bodies, his sentence was reduced to 22 years.
