Review of Final Fantasy X (10)
When Final Fantasy went from Snes to PSone, it went through a dramatic change. The same can be said about its first PS2 title. First off the graphics are so luscious you will want to pack your bags and go to Besaid for a nice long vacation. The details are unbelievable. The character designs are one of if not the best I’ve seen in a Final Fantasy (especially Khimari). The world map and pre-rendered backgrounds have been removed in favor of full 3d graphics.
This Final Fantasy is a little straighter forward than the rest since the areas are all chained together and the world map has been eliminated. The battle system has had an even bigger overhaul. The ATB (Active Time Battle) has been switched with a turn based grid which gives more time for strategizing.
The leveling up has been taken out and a new way of achieving skills, stats, and abilities called the sphere grid has been introduced. I personally feel it was a great innovation. Many people were ranting about the new mini-game called Blitzball (as sport that is like a mix between soccer, basketball and football). I do not know why I loved every minute of it, I guess it’s a judgment call there. As for the storyline I thought it was descent. A young boy who is a Blitzball star tries to escape from an attack on metropolis known as Zanarkand. He gets help from his mentor. His mentor throws him into a portal where he ends up 1000 years into the future to a world known as Spira. There he meets a summoner and joins her on her quest to defeat Sin, a giant monster terrorizing the world and killing anything in its path. I don’t want to give away too much but to my disappointment the story did not end on a good note. But I guess that’s what X-2 is for.
