Review of Final Fantasy 9 (IX)

If you’ve played any of the classic FF titles you’ll feel right at home. This final fantasy was the last one for the PSone. They decided to go out with a bang and they succeeded. The original games had more of a medieval theme to it and this was a sort of homage to them. I was really amazed by the FMV’s in the game. The quality is so good that it has better quality than most PS2 games right now! Squaresoft spared no expense on this title. The graphics blew FFVII and FFVIII out of the water. Though it didn’t really go for a realistic look like FFVIII did, but the graphics were much more detailed. The characters returned to their big head/short body form once again.

The battle system is very different from FFVII and FFVIII; it is more a kin to the old titles for the Snes. Each character has their own abilities and statistics (in FFVII material can teach anyone any skill and in FFVIII the Guardian Forces contained skills when equipped). Each character also has their own job classes for example: Vivi is a black mage and Steiner is a Knight.

The storyline in FFIX was not as serious or dramatic as FFVII and FFVIII. It was more like a light hearted fairytale. It still had its serious moments and the sympathy was enhanced by the wonderful music in the game. The light hearted story was a change of pace for the game but it was also very refreshing. I would recommend this title to anyone. If a long quest to save the world is your thing then this is the game you’ve been waiting for.
