From the makers of Chrono Trigger we have the RPG masters Hironobu Sakaguchi, Akira Toriyama and Nobuo Uematsu. Blue Dragon has that feel of the classic Japanese RPG but it lacks the masterful storytelling and strong characters.

The characters in this game are unlikable brats. Then there is the time spent which seemed like 5 hours just trying to figure out the story and get hooked into the game. What average player is going to play a game like this with such a slump that you force yourself to play so long just on hopes of it getting better in the long run. Last time this happened to me, I played Elder Scrolls: Morrowind and that only lasted for about 2-3 hours.

But this is where Blue Dragon shines; it has a great battle system.  All enemies are visible on screen so say goodbye to those random battles every 3-5 steps. Your “shadow” beasts are awesome. Blue Dragon could have been so much more and I have a feeling that Mistwalker tried to keep the game as safe as possible. Worth the rental though.
