Review of The Darkness
This game has to be one the best in story telling that has come around in a while. You truly experience some exciting, off the walls gruesome and gut wrenching scenes in Starbreeze Studio's latest release. I had experiences in single player reminiscent to all other games where they become a little slow and leave you wondering, "Which way do I go?" Jackie Estacado is a true badass who controls the darkness within while having extra benefits like to hell of some little hellish minions to do your dirty work. You can stretch your deadly tentacles to impale foes while your minions poke out their little terrified eyes. In a script that must have been rewritten hundreds of times until perfection, we have a story where you feel total remorse for the character Jackie has become and on the same note your like "this guy is a cold hearted killer, I like!"
Game play revolves on remaining in the shadows in order to keep with your true horrifying abilities. You are damn near invulnerable in the darkness and therefore darkness is your domain. In the final two hours you are like hell on wheels where you can send out your killer tentacles, open black holes and impaling enemies. Funny thing is that when you are not using The Darkness, it all feels like a standard First Person Shooter (FPS) with a still superb story.
The level designs are beautifully done with their great detail, texture and even the light/shadows are pretty cool. But, what the hell happened in the design phase that called for these long ass distances between objectives. I spent most of my time wondering why am I in the New York subway system for so much time.
Story telling is just great in The Darkness and not easy to match but weaknesses like wasting time between objectives due to enormous distances is just plane weird. While shooting, in this FPS, some shots were off as well. You will stay hooked for some hours on The Darkness however and even though some bugs do exist along with minor short comings, they to me warranted the 9.0 that Darkness has received.
