Review of Chrono Cross
My all time favorite game is Chrono Trigger, so it's no question that I was dying for a sequel. Finally in 2000 Squaresoft finally answered my prayers. Chrono Cross is one of the best games that used the Playstation to its full capabilities. The detail in the entire game really show off what the Playstation can do. The game picks up 20 years after the original Chrono Trigger. You now take the role of another "silent protagonist" Serge. They have done away with time traveling and took a twilight zone approach by letting you cross through dimensions instead. The cast of characters in this game are even weirder than the first and there are over 40 of them to choose from. They all look cool thanks to the creators of the anime Record of Lodoss War. But I will admit I would have preferred Akira Toriyama any day. Characters design aside the detail in the graphics where amazing, even surpassing Final Fantasy. Every character (boss or not) actually limps when they are close to dying. Every character has so much detail put into them. The battle system I must say is the true star of this game. It is very original and addictive. The battle system is based on a stamina grid which lets you choose 3 types of attacks. Instead of using the ATB (active time battle) you use stamina points. It seems confusing but it's really simple once you get the hang of it. The soundtrack is another aspect that really pleased me in this game. There was a unique variety in the many styles of music used in the game from the Arabic/Persian opening them to the Japanese acoustic ending. This game seems like it was created for your listening pleasure. Many people won't give you any complaints about this game (and I can't blame them). My only problem was that there was not that much of a connection to the original Chrono Trigger. The storyline was still superb with twists in all the right places. Chrono Cross along with Final Fantasy IX was Squaresofts' last appearance on the Playstation. And I must say they did not disappoint. You won't either if you give this title a try. This game is worthy of its predecessor in every aspect. A modern classic. You must play it!!
