“The Pathfinder Horror” is the story of Thomas Barrow, a rapist and murderer, and of the revenge that is eventually taken against him and some others with whom he becomes associated.
Thomas is the surviving heir of a wealthy Grays Harbor logging family who as a young man—hardly more than a boy—learns to gratify his lust by the rape and murder of teen girls and later, women. In his early wanderings through the forest and around Barrow Lake Thomas learned to think of himself as the Pathfinder.
There are two protagonists through which much of the story unfolds. The first is Richard Ivarson. While at college the young woman he loves is raped and murdered. The criminal is not found. Years later, the second, Karin Eckdahl is kidnapped by the Pathfinder, and escapes, but only in her life, not in her dreams.
Karin, an artist, portrays her dreams in oil paintings, and is discovered by Richard. A love affair follows, and they begin their hunt for her kidnapper—not seeing there may be a connection with Richard’s past.
The second half of the story begins when, secretly, and unknown to everyone else, Thomas’s Nemeses comes and begins a cycle of terrible revenge.
