    book comes in handy

I found this book very useful. I wouldn't go by the authors rating of the movies since eveyone has different taste in what they might find a great movie to be. I did enjoy reading his reviews for some humor though but definatly wouldn't agree with. This book however is a great way to find movies you probably haven't heard of or forgot about. I would recommend having this book for reference only not reviews. I use mine to keep track of movies I would like to find and movies I already have.

    Fairly comprehensive...

'Creature Features' is fairly comprehensive as far as having most horror/sci-fi titles present, although by no means does it have EVERY title you could hope (or hope not) to find in these genres. Still, it's the only reference book that I know of which attempts this, so for this alone it gets three stars.

However, as others have mentioned, it's riddled with errors, even with regards to extremely popular cult films like 'Friday the 13th'. He gets the killer in the original 'Friday the 13th' WRONG in his review, and it's really NOT that complex of a film. In fact, I get the impression that John Stanley probably just read the plot synopsis on the back of the cases for several in the 'Friday the 13th' series, and it's annoying that he "reviews" the films and even RATES them without having apparently not even seen them.

And although it's pretty much a given that most critics' opinions suck, you'd think someone writing a reference guide SOLELY for horror and sci-fi would have some appreciation for this stuff, but mostly it's by-the-numbers. He gives the 'Star Wars' films five stars, and ZERO criticism, just as you'd expect... Although I would probably be afraid to publicly criticize this plotless lightshow series as well, considering it's... well, INSANE fan base. He gives 'Highlander II' an incredibly generous TWO stars and rattles on about the wonderful choreography, which was actually really terrible, and he makes no attempt to warn fans about the fact that 'Highlander II' apparently hates the plot to its excellent predecessor so it completely disregards it. Ironically, Ebert (who I hate) gave this film a more accurate review. He doesn't like 'Mystery Science Theater 3000'. I agree with him on several of his reviews, but all-in-all, I'd have to say he's pretty comparable to most of the other status quo critics out there. He just doesn't seem to "get it".
