Review of Wildside

  • VOYA âOutstanding Books of the Yearâ selection
An American Library Association âBest Booksâ selection

    Forget the lottery.

Teenager Charlie Newell has just discovered something that will make him and his friends billionaires. What if a world existed in which no humans ever evolved? No cities. No pollution. No laws. A fantastic world filled with unimaginable riches in which everythingâeverythingâwas yours just for the taking?

Charlie has found that world. And he plans to use it to make him and his friends rich.

There is a problem: How do you keep something this big a secret?

    Product Description
  • A suspenseful example of an emerging subgenre, the homage to Heinlein's young adult fiction, this novel will satisfy readers of all ages. Eighteen-year-old Charlie Newell has inherited a ranch from Uncle Max, who is missing, presumed dead. Hidden behind a pile of old hay in the barn is a tunnel that doesn't lead to the airstrip but to a pristine, uninhabited parallel Texas stocked with extinct megafauna. Charlie recruits four friends to help him exploit the wild side of his ranch, but the project becomes wilder than they expect, and they find themselves in danger not from saber-toothed tigers, but from their fellow Americans.

    Great fun.

Jumper (which I read well before the movie) put Gould on my watch list. I might not have bought this title otherwise as the cover and description weren't that convincing.

I'm very glad I did though. It was a very fun read. It's suitable for the Young Adult, but don't let that scare you off if you're older.

    Very good!

After reading Jumper, I went online looking for more Steven Gould books, ordered 4( sadly one was just a comic book at a very inflated price, the prequel book). After reading 3 Jumper books opened Wild Side and it was
great. Lots of detail and all reasonable. Would like to see mover books
    in this series.

Too similar to another great book

I bought this book because its by the author of Jumper. While Mr. Gould writes some good stories... I was not impressed by this book.

Within 5 minutes of reading the 1st chapter I knew right away this was Too similar to another great book, "Conquistador" by S.M. Stirling.

Many parts of the book, mostly the tunnel to a parallel earth, and the wild animals on the other side are way too familiar to Stirling's "Conquistador."

Overall "Wildside" is interesting fiction for the young adult reader.

Its interesting to me that "Conquistador" by S.M. Stirling (clearly a superior read to Wildside) was 1st published in 2003 (and the ROC mass market paperback published in 2004) and apparently "Wildside" by Steven Gould was published in 2003. It makes me wonder if the two authors ever read each others work.

    Adventure & Coming of Age

Yet another book by Gould that delivers! He's one of my favorite authors. It's exhilerating to join the main character as he discovers a link to another world, and really comes into his own as an independent young adult and entrepreneur. All four main characters bring a very realistic human element to the story, and at times I found myself even more interested in their interactions than the "business" at hand. But perhaps that's just me... "Wildside" is a great adventure story, sure to make you wish YOU had your own link to an alternate universe! Since you don't (am I wrong?), the book is the next best thing.

Worth every penny. A definite buy!

This book will make you think "what would I do if I had that portal?" Story itself is nice and tight, characters are well constructed and imaginative author strikes gold with this book.

This would be a great read for your vacation. Worth its money on hardback or paperback. Pick it up!
