Review of Necronomicon: The Best Weird Tales of H. P. Lovecraft (Gollancz SF)
- Originally written for the pulp magazines of the 1920s and 1930s, H. P. Lovecraft's astonishing tales blend elements of horror, science fiction, and cosmic terror that are as powerful today as they were when they were first published. This tome brings together all of Lovecraft's harrowing stories, including the complete Cthulhu Mythos cycle, just the way they were first released. It will introduce a whole new generation of readers to Lovecraft's fiction, as well as attract those fans who want all his work in a single, definitive volume.

a great edition
i was impressed with the look and feel of this book. i received the hardcover last night. cool illustrations as well. maybe not the most lavish nor complete volume, however, for the price you can't beat it.

Not the greatest collection, but ok
When I pre-ordered this, I assumed it was the complete work of Lovecraft. I already had and loved Dreams of Terror and Death: The Dream Cycle of H. P. Lovecraft and The Dunwich Horror and Other Weird Tales and was looking for something more definitive. Unfortunately, as others say, it is not his complete work, but mostly well-known tales - and in no particular order or grouping.
The paperback binding does feel a little cheap, but nothing too horrible. I love the inclusion of the Miskatonic Quadrangle inside the cover and the drawings are stunning. It seems like the publishers poured all their money into the paper, type, and pictures (which are all great) - then remembered they needed covers.
A note on the pictures: Yes the pen-and-ink drawings are amazingly done, but some of them have absolutely nothing to do with the story they are grouped with. Repeated images are a little annoying as well.
If you're looking for a paperback collection of 37 of Lovecraft's most well-known stories, then this "Commemorative Edition" is worth it.

HP.Lovecraft collection
Received my copy, nice cover for a softcover book and a excellant if incomplete collection of Mr.Lovecraft's works, unluckily due to ownership and rights issue probably the closest we'll ever come to a complete collection of his works. Nice drawing included with each story make for a suitable atmosphere to enjoy the stories with.

Not as described
I agree, I purchased this item due to its billing as a complete collection of Lovecraft's stories. Sadly, it's not.

BEYOND THE WALL OF SANITY. 4 out of 5
"Stoop not down unto the darkly splendid world;
Wherin continually lieth faithless depth,
and hades wrapped in clouds,
delighting in unintellible images,
precipitous, winding, a black ever-rolling abyss;
ever espousing a body unluminous, formless and void."
-The Chaldean Oracles of Zoroaster.
The description of this is wrong, and Amazon has not yet changed it. This book is 880 pages long including an in-depth biography. This does NOT contain 'all' of his stories as the description implies; the cover says 'best of' and is 36 of his short stories.
All the greats are here:
'The Call of Cthulhu', 'The Dunwich horror', 'The Shadow out of Time', 'Dagon', 'Re-Animator', and 30 more are in this volume and many people will likely have these stories in various smaller collections, but it is good to have all the greats in one volume. This is a worthy addition, but lost a star due to the mis-information.
Oh how I wish for the day when a single, large 'Necronomicon'('Evil Dead' anyone?) style volume is released that contains ALL stories from the different time periods!!
