Mine to Possess - 4.5 Stars

Nalini Singh is an amazing writer, and her Psy-Changeling series is one of the best paranormal romance series out there.
The series takes place in a futuristic world close enough to our own where forests and concrete jungles fight for dominance over the land, and three races keep clashing and meshing: The ice-cold Psy with mental superpowers; the hot, oh-so-sexy Changelings who can shift into animals (big cats, wolves, you name it); and Humans, their go-betweens.

"Mine To Possess" is book 4 in this series; I advise with all my heart to read this series in a chronological order (ah, I do hate the word "chronological"!):
Lucas and Sascha's story: Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changelings, Book 1) - My absolute favorite!
Vaughn and Faith's story: Visions of Heat (Psy-Changelings, Book 2)
Judd and Brenna's story: Caressed By Ice (Psy-Changelings, Book 3)

Book 1 introduced us to the DarkRiver leopard pack, the dominant predators of San Francisco, and its sexy alpha Lucas Hunter. Book 4 tells the story of Clay Bennett, the deadliest of DarkRiver's sentinels (the sentinels help their alpha control and protect the pack).

Clay, a half-human/half-leopard, has always walked the fine edge of surrendering to his beast and going rogue. Violence claws at his soul, and he struggles it each and every day.

Enters Talin McKade. She's human. She's terrified of Clay. And she desperately needs his help.

As kids, Talin and Clay shared the most powerful of emotional bonds. They were torn apart when Clay slaughtered Talin's abusive foster father to save Talin's life. He's been sent to spend years in juvenile hall; she's been been raised by a farmers' foster family. Deeply traumatized, Talin asked Social Services to notify Clay that she had died in a car crash.
Now, twenty years later, Talin finds Clay. The street children she works to protect as part of the "Shine" project are disappearing, later to be found brutally murdered. Determined to keep them safe, she turns to the strongest man she knows...

Clay lost Talin once, and when she storms back into his life he knows he won't lose her again. But he scents her fear from him, and it wounds his deeply protective changeling heart.

Could Talin accept Clay's predatory nature? Could Clay forgive Talin? Could these childhood friends cross the line and become lovers? Who kills Shine's children, and why?

Nalini Singh solves all of these questions as she weaves a masterful plot of hot romance and suspense. The book lost half-a-star because the romance took a wee bit less focus in this one. Nevertheless I enjoyed the book wholeheartedly. Each book in this series also serves to advance the Psy-Changeling battle plotline to a climax (Mmmmmm....) I can't wait to reach. Oh, yes, I'm definitely buying the next book in the series - Hostage to Pleasure (Psy-Changelings, Book 5)

    didn't like

I loved all the books in the series but not this one. The character Talin was completely unlikable. I hope the next book will be better because this one was a disappointment.

    selfish

I didn't give this book a higher review because I did not care for the character Talin at all. I agree with the other reviewer that she came off as completely selfish and jealous. Not only that but a user to boot. I hope this book is an abberation and Dorian's book will be better.

    Hot book!

I couldn't stop reading this one and it was hot! Lots of sexual tension and conflict with a great plot. Great read! Can't wait for the next one.

    Mine To Possess

Tally McKade is dead. At least that is what Clay Bennett has been led to believe. Told years ago that she died while he was incarcerated for a crime he committed to keep her safe, Clay has spent the subsequent years without her. But he never forgot her. Now, just when he has found his niche with the DarkRiver leopard changeling pack as a sentinel, Clay is close to discovering that all he believes is a lie. With Tally's delicate scent guiding him, Clay comes face to face with the woman that the girl he used to know and love has become.

Talin McKade had social services tell Clay Bennett she was dead for a reason. She had been a mere child, unable to deal with the repercussions and aftermath of that horrifying time of her life. Never intending to let Clay know that she was alive, Talin has become a counselor that helps the same sort of child that she herself used to be. But, something is different with the children under her care. They are all prodigies and they seem to be disappearing at an alarming rate. With no one to turn to but Clay, Talin will risk everything to keep even one child from experiencing the horrific childhood that she herself experienced.

Mine to Possess is the anxiously anticipated fifth book in Nalini Singh's wildly popular Psy/Changeling series. Clay Bennett fought long and hard to find his place within the DarkRiver pack and his loyalty to his fellow pack mates and Talin was noteworthy indeed. For years he regretted the actions that tore his world apart. In one act of violence Clay protected the girl he was bonded with, but in doing so, he lost her forever. This loyalty to Talin was heartwarming and achingly beautiful.

Sadly, Clay's loyalty to Talin was not enough to soothe my romance loving soul. I wanted heat. I wanted passion. I wanted more than just Talin and Clay touching hands. This story was heavy in science fiction, which is fine - but it was much too light in the romance department. I wanted more between the two main characters. There was no heat, no sizzle, no pop.

While I loved the premise of Mine to Possess, it just didn't live up to the previous Changeling books. I found this upsetting because out of all the books in this wonderful series, Clay's story was the one I anticipated the most. In addition, side stories and too many point of view changes added their own confusion.
