Zombies are one of those horror staples that have gotten putrid, after one too many idiotic blood'n'gore-fests with a revolting script. Like poor Dracula, they run out of things to do.

But zombie films are revitalized by the wickedly funny "Shaun of the Dead," a tale of music, love, pubs, and the slobbering undead. In the vein of Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive," it's full of twisted humour, funny dialogue and plenty of gore.

Shaun (Simon Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) are the poster boys for adolescentus slackeritis, living in a London flat with their peeved roommate Pete, who has actually grown up and gotten a real job. Ed plays video games all day, and Shaun's immaturity has just gotten him dumped by his long-suffering girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield).

Wrapped up in his love life woes, Shaun fails to notice a little news item: Human beings all over London are transforming into zombies. At first, Shaun obliviously drowns his sorrows, and has a nasty encounter when he goes to pick up a soda. Now he must mend his relationship with Liz and defend himself and his family from the hordes of ravenous zombies... by barricading them in a pub.

"Shaun" makes the whole genre seem fresh just because it doesn't take itself seriously. The heroes don't even have guns (since the UK public don't get them), and so our heroes fend off the zombies with vinyl records, shovels and cricket bats. That gives…

Before 28 Weeks Later there was 28 Days Later. 28 Days Later is directed by Danny Boyle, 28 Days Later is simply an amazing film that puts a new twist on the classic zombie movie. The story is about a man awaking from a coma twenty-eight days after a new virus has wiped out a huge percentage of the general population. Anyone who is infected with the virus and lives seems to become a raging, mindless, homicidal lunatic that tears apart anything moving. Of course the man meets other survivors, and they begin looking for a way to endure. 28 Days Later storyline makes an awesome statement about the destructiveness of human nature while presenting one of the scariest horror movies made in a long time. 28 Days Later is a must see for everybody.

Bringing the fear of zombies to the next generation, these zombie creatures are the result of genetic research that seems to have been poorly managed allowing a leak to get out, tempted to add spoiler. The zombie plague in 28 Days Later overruns London and then it seems to take over the world. Jim, former bike courier wakes up in a hospital to find every it deserted until he comes in contact with these flesh eating creatures. Jim gathers friends found along the way and together they take a journey in order to find other human survivors. In this scary movie, the zombie creatures infect you with their blood and with all the blood splatters…

I liked the remake better then the original. George Romero’s zombie film was great for it’s time but it is a new age. The Dawn of the Dead remake delivers gruesome blood gushing wounds, explosions and zombies on fire, I love it.

The zombie horde take over a city and the survivors find shelter in a shopping mall which in fact is the best place to be, it’s secure and has everything you need for day to day life. Dawn of the Dead delivers great action scenes in the first 20 minutes that you’ll need to see all over again.

There is an extremely unnerving seen which details the insanity that a parent will endure to preserve their bloodline. When I saw this scene, it both touched and appalled every fiber of my being.

Best zombie kill scene: The shopping mall has a great stock of guns and the survivors get a sniper rifle in which they use to kill all zombies who look like celebrities, genius.

Zombie infestation starts after a satellite crashes back to earth then emits radiation thus bring back the dead as walking dead zombie flesh eaters. Survivors end up retreating to a lonely farmhouse to take shelter against the zombie swarm.

Black and white might hold you back from this classic movie along with the low budget but you will enjoy this one. Not too scary considering the graphics and style of today’s films but the movie still holds its weight. I heard stories growing up of old time horror fans who saw this the same night it came out and being scared to the bone while fearing to go home.

Best zombie kill scene: The final kill scene has to be the one that comes to mind, what a shame.

Army of Darkness is the final entry to the Evil Dead trilogy. The Evil Dead trilogy is another of my all time favorites even though they had an extremely tight budget with each horror movie. This masterpiece is from the director of the Spider-Man franchise Sam Raimi and B-movie king Bruce Campbell plays Ash, the great zombie killing/bashing hero.

This one took the cake. I loved Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness' horror mixed with a gothic castlevania setting. The Evil Dead III: Army of Darkness is great to watch anytime... especially excellent when your bored. Army of Darkness is my favorite of the Evil Dead franchise.

Bruce Campbell plays Ash Williams who is a S-Mart employee that gets transported back in time to medieval England. The Necronomicon is the key back but once retrieved raises the army of the dead in which Evil Ash becomes the leader and leads the war of the undead. The zombie hordes are pushed back by Ash in an incredibly funny way. Not really a scary movie but very enjoyable.

Best zombie kill scene: Ash kills massive amounts of zombies by mounting propeller blades on the front of his Oldsmobile while spinning around in the castle courtyard.

Day of the Dead is the third installment in George A. Romero's Living Dead Trilogy. The first two being the classics; Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead. Moving away from the comic book like, almost dark comedy-ish atmosphere, Day of the Dead is by far the darkest and goriest in the trilogy (despite Night of the Living Dead's haunting ending).

Day of the Dead pretty much picks up where Dawn left off. The zombies are still taking over the world, and people are still running. A group of researchers and a few military men have taken shelter in an underground mine shaft to try to find an answer to the havoc that the zombies have caused. Due to the isolation, tension flies between the researchers and the military officers, and finally the blood begins to shed between them.

Outside from the very good storyline, Day of the Dead is a very gory film, and is perhaps, make up special effects master Tom Savini's best work. I really don't think I should give away any spoilers for this film, for it's definitely the least popular in the series, and probably the least seen. People should really see this movie, for it's a great idea and some really real looking gore. Dan O'Bannon (author of "Alien") wrote and directed this near spoof of the zombie genre. At Uneeda Medical Supply warehouse (HAHA!), Army cannisters contaning corpses infected with Trioxin Gas have been wrongfully stored. Next thing you know the two dimwits working in the place (James Karen and Thom Mathews) have accidentally released one of the undead, as well as the gas which causes zombification. Through an odd and funny series of events, they end up cremating a zombie, releasing the deadly smoke into the sky where it mixes with rain which falls onto a nearby cemetary. Soon hordes of the undead are up and stalking the living. The zombies of this movie are different than most as they move quickly, can speak, and crave only brains. This movie is incredibly funny while still full of traditional zombie shocks and gore. You gotta see this one.

Peter Jackson directed Dead Alive long before he started the great Lord of the Rings franchise and his current project The Hobbit. Imagine what Jackson could have done if he had Weta Digital around back then. This zombie flick has been banned across many countries and has to be one of the goriest films ever. One scene required five gallons of fake blood per second to pull off one of these living dead scenes in which made me even appalled.

Lionel, played by Timothy Balme is the by product of an overbearing mother and when Lionel finally gets a new girlfriend, all hell breaks lose. Mom becomes a flesh eating zombie of course and what follows is a zombie infestation that Lionel must slaughter every walking dead in his path making for an entertaining zombie massacre.

No official awards were won here but Peter Jackson made a classic if you can stomach watching this gory scary movie.

Best zombie kill scene: Lionel armed with his lawnmower crashed a zombie party held at his mothers’ house. These zombies drink alcohol, make love or something like it and rock to loud music.

Hubert West studies include reviving the dead human brain and creates a re-animator fluid in which he injects into his subjects and raises them back from the dead. The fluid still has it’s side effects and this zombie film has great thrills thanks to Jeffrey Combs’ performance, which is stunning.

Best zombie kill scene: An unsuspecting zombie is the victim of Dr Herbert West as he uses an electric bone saw to perform heart surgery.

Timmy Robinson befriends a six foot tall zombie named Fido. Fido ends up doing what all zombies end up doing, eating the neighbors. Mom and Dad get upset of course but poor Timmy loves Fido. Timmy does all that he can to keep Fido.

Milla Jovovich is back in the third chapter of the hugely successful Resident Evilfranchise! This action-packed horror film is set in the Nevada desert and filled with intense special effects and more zombie terror! Las Vegas means fun in the sun. Well, at least the sun is still there. Except for a few rusting landmarks, it looks pretty much like the rest of the desert - or the whole country, for that matter. The crowds are now flesh-eating zombies: the mass undead, the oozing, terrifying sludge of what remains. Here, the newly upgraded Alice, along with her crew (Oded Fehr, Mike Epps, Ali Larter, Ashanti) will make a final stand against evil - with one goal: to turn the undead dead again.

Lucio Fulci created some of the best zombie films proving that Italians love zombies and gore. Lucio is a tricky one that in order to create more attention to his film, actually first named this movie Zombi 2 in order to ride the popular praise that was generated my George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead that was known throughout Europe as Zombi.

A journalist basically decides to go to a remote mysterious Caribbean island with her friend and learn that most of the village has been turned into zombies through Voodoo rights. The elements of this scary movie work well like the environment is eerie, the score is chilling and the makeup of the zombies is quite good. Susan is played by Auretta Gay and is yet another horror movie girl that looks delicious.

Resident Evil 2 rocks! Descent storyline and great effects. That is exactly why this series does so well. Instead of using bad computer generated effects, everything is mostly makeup and body suits. Nemesis is a real person with a body suit on and tons of makeups that add to the realism and make the numerous action scenes look great and bad-ass.

Now that the basic story of Resident Evil has been setup, its time to have some fun. At the end of the original, the scientists seize Alice and the next survivor and put them into the Nemesis Program. Alice is the after product of the T-virus that just changes her DNA to grant her super strength, agility and speed. On the other hand, Nemesis is the T-virus in an advanced zombie blessed with the exact same qualities as Alice. Alice is living tissue with her own mind while Nemesis is dead tissue reanimated. The movies main plot is to pit them against one another to see who the better specimen is. You have to see this all out war between these two icons. Also, you might find the city of zombies, courtesy of the Umbrella Corporation pretty cool too.

Rupert Everette is Francesco Dellamorte whose daily chore is the smash the skulls of all the living dead who revive after several days of being buried only to be reburied. Worth watching this movie for it’s humor and take on the zombie film genre. Anna Fulchi is a hot Italian model, who plays a widow who comes back from the dead as a zombie but still looks stunning.

Best zombie kill scene: Francesco is getting his freak on with the widow while the widows’ deceased husband rises from the dead. Francesco quickly bashes his brain in with the shovel and removes some of his manly parts in the process.

Nick Cannon, Mena Suvari and Ving Rhames star in this horror film based on the George A. Romero classic zombie film. A mysterious virus has infected the small town of Leadville, Colorado, and the military is brought in to enforce a quarantine and stop the spread of the disease. As people perish, survivors realize that the virus is creating the walking dead who crave human flesh. Only a small number of people are immune to the virus, and those few survivors must battle to fend off the infected zombies while trying to make it out of town alive.
